Custom "One of a Kind" Man's Valet is made from AUSTRALIAN CYPRESS, Scientific Name: Callitris glauca, sometimes called, Cypress-Pine, Murray Pine and Murray River Pine. Found in New South Wales and Queensland, Australia. There is a high degree of color variability in Australian cypress, as the sapwood can be cream- or straw-colored, while the heartwood ranges from honey-gold to brown, with darker knots throughout to add character. For a warm, rustic, "country" look, Australian cypress is an excellent choice. Over time there may be some slight ambering or muting of color tones. It has a fine, lustrous texture with a typically straight grain. The wood has an aromatic camphor-like odor. This species grows in a semi-arid area of Australia, which bestows on it the unique property of being the only commercial softwood that is actually harder (Janka Hardness: 1375) than red oak — making it superior for both residential and commercial use. Because of its relative hardness and excellent durability, Australian cypress wood flooring has very good dimensional stability; however, in actual installations, significant movement can sometimes be seen. Australian cypress is thirty-seven percent harder than teak, just slightly harder than white oak (one percent), five percent softer than hard maple, twenty-eight percent softer than jarrah, and about sixty-two percent as hard as santos mahogany's ranking of 2200. I love working with this wood and when machining, it has a wonderful smell. The top is banded with MACASSAR EBONY (Diospyros celebica) is one of a group of ebonies from the East Indies, ranging from Sri Lanka to Indonesia. This close- grained, heavy hardwood machines and turns well, but tends to dull tools and is difficult to glue. Ebony is used for turned and carved items, inlays and small accent pieces. This wood is so expensive, that they sell it by the pound. This Chest was build so the grain "wraps" around the Chest and matches on all four corners, matching three is easy, but matching four took me a long time to figure out. Every box I build gets 6 to 8 coats of polyurethane oil finish that is "Hand Rubbed" to give them the best finish possible. There is a lift out tray and both tray and bottom of Valet are covered with velvet. There is plenty of room for rings, coins, a watch and other small things. This Valet will become a family heirloom to be passed on to generation to generation, I hope.
